Outreach

Few joys compare to the spark of curiosity.
Hands-on Outreach

The science lessons that stuck with me were hands-on, and from Vanderbilt to Santa Cruz I have been involved in developing and deploying hands-on lessons for K-12 classrooms. Below are organizations in which I have been involved, and though I am not active in all of them, I think sharing their resources will benefit public outreach education. I am always happy to learn of more resources, so please reach out.

VSVS is run by the wonderful Pat Tellinghuisen and myriad student volunteers. It was energizing to be part of such a large organization reaching thousdands of Nashville students annually. I still reference these lessons.

Aspirnaut focuses on using technology to bring hands-on lessons to rural classrooms. Kits go out beforehand, and video-conferencing leads the discussion like modern remote classes.

WiSE is run by graduate student volunteers and does far more than just outreach. My officer position was in outreach, and I also manage the website and add to our list of resources regarding women and diversity in STEM fields.

CC-RISE is a mentorship program pairing community college students with research labs to gain lab experience before transferring to 4-year universities. It was gratifying to both be a mentor and coordinate this summer program.

Public Talks

I love to tell a good story.

WiSE officers were invited to give a series of talks at the Esalen Institute on cutting edge science with themes of change. I spoke of climate change in the Yucatan and similarities to California's sensitivity to drought current usage of California's water resources.

Field work inevitably results in stories. This Science on Tap talk brought field work and geochemistry in the Yucatan to the Santa Cruz communty. You can view the talk here.

A fun weekend teaching Pinnacles geology to naturalists who would run summer programs in the region. Pinnacles is a neat place.
